Rockin’ Patent Application – Sen Gorkem’s “A Musical Instrument”

WO 2013/172803 A4 – Sen Gorkem – A Musical Instrument - Patents Rock - Russell IP
  • Rockin’ Patent Application: WO 2013/172803 A4
  • Filed: 20 May 2013
  • In the name of: Sen Gorkem
  • Title: A Musical Instrument
  • What’s claimed: “A musical instrument consisted of one shell (1) which has a stretched membrane (2) on it, and one or more springs (4); one edge of which is attached to the membrane (2, 3) and the other edge is attached to either one or more strings of at least one stringed instrument or another membrane stretched onto a shell.”
  • Why this patent application rocks: This patent application appears to relate to the ‘Yaybahar’ invented by Gorkem Sen, an acoustic instrument in which the vibrations from the strings are transmitted via the coiled springs to the frame drums. Those vibrations are converted into sound by the membranes which echo on the coiled springs. If you’re curious to know more about the Yaybahar, see here. To hear how it sounds, see here for a video.
