UK Address For Service Required For New UK Patent, Trade Mark and Registered Design Applications

Anyone filing a new application for a UK patent, trade mark or registered design must provide a UK address for service in connection with that application. The address for service allows the UK Intellectual Property Office (UK IPO) and third parties to reliably contact the applicant about the application or any granted rights that subsequently derive from it. It also allows documents relating to intellectual property proceedings to be delivered reliably to the applicant or rights holder via the address for service, where necessary.

Restrictions On Addresses

Typically, an address for service will be a business address associated with the applicant or its representative. This could be an office, shop, warehouse, workshop or other business premises associated with the applicant or representative. However, an applicant can also supply a home address (e.g. of a director or employee), a PO box, or any other address where the applicant can legitimately receive post. However, since that address would appear on a public record, applicants may prefer not to use a personal address. An address in the UK, the Channel Islands, the Isle of Man or Gibraltar is considered a valid address for service.

Do I Need To Update My Existing Granted Rights To Have A UK Address For Service?

If your existing granted right has an address for service in the European Economic Area (EEA), you may not need to update the address for service if you only need to perform one of the limited range of actions described here in relation to your granted right. Otherwise, you may be required to supply a UK address for service. For guidance on whether you need to provide a new address for service, please get in touch with your usual Russell IP contact directly or via the contact button below.
