I’m a head-banging Patent Attorney that specialises in securing strong patents for music-tech companies. After 15 years of working at law firms, I decided to go solo and have since worked on hundreds of applications over the past few years.

Here are some things you should know about me:

I literally wrote the book on passing the UK patent drafting exam and run a training programme for that. I also run a training programme for the European patent attorney exams. In total, I’ve helped 700+ trainee patent attorneys to pass their patent drafting and amendment exams.
Russell IP is an allied trade member of the Music Industries Association, which is the trade body for the UK musical instrument industry.
I’m an inventor in my own right, having set up and run several businesses myself. This isn’t a textbook exercise for me; I’ve gone through the process myself so I know what to look out for from a commercial perspective.
I helped set up a community for recording enthusiasts which has more than 3,000 members and counting.

When I’m not drafting patent applications or rockin’ out in the studio, I like to put my efforts into community projects. I am the founder of DefibFest, a music festival that raises money for public defibrillators – one of which has already saved someone’s life.

Do you work with individuals or only businesses?

I don’t currently work with individuals; only legal entities such as limited companies and LLPs.

Do you work with start-ups?

Yes. I work with patent-savvy companies of any size, including start-ups. I’m best-suited to working with start-ups that have an existing patent portfolio or that have team members with prior experience of patents.

Can you work to fixed / capped fees?

Yes, I prefer working to fixed fees where possible.

What if we have more work than you’d probably be able to handle by yourself?

I can suggest other patent attorneys in solo or small practices who I may be able to work with for larger projects.

Do you handle areas of IP other than patents, such as registered designs, trademarks, and copyright?

No. I don’t currently handle work in those other areas, but I’m happy to refer you to other IP specialists who do.
