Russell IP Founder to Lead CIPA AI Committee

We are thrilled to announce the appointment of Iain Russell, Founder and Director of Russell IP, as Chair of the brand-new AI Committee of The Chartered Institute of Patent Attorneys (CIPA).

Background of the New AI Committee

The AI Committee was previously known as the CIPA AI Task Force and aims to assess the impact of AI on patent attorneys and users of the patent system. The Committee will take a strategic perspective on how developments in AI may affect the provision and delivery of IP services by the UK patent profession – a topic about which Iain is especially passionate.

The Increasing Significance of AI in the Patent Profession

AI’s growing capabilities are already affecting patent strategy, from searching and patent drafting to patent portfolio valuation. As AI tools become more refined, the areas of patent work on which AI has an influence will only increase. This should lead to many benefits for users of the patent system, including improved efficiency and reduced costs, but may also carry some risks, such as concerns about confidentiality and the accuracy of generative AI’s work products.

The AI Committee will build on the work already carried out by the Computer Technology Committee and the former AI Task Force, inviting diverse viewpoints from private practice, industry and beyond as it produces its guidance.
