Rockin’ Patent – Lippold Haken et al’s “Method And System For Providing Pressure-controlled Transitions”

US Patent No. 7,902,450 - Lippold Haken et al - Method And System For Providing Pressure-controlled Transitions - Patents Rock - Russell IP
  • Rockin’ Patent®: US Patent No. 7,902,450
  • Filed: 13 January 2007
  • In the name of: (inventors) Lippold Haken, Mark Smart and Edmund Eagan
  • Title: Method And System For Providing Pressure-controlled Transitions
  • What’s claimed: “A method for providing pressure-controlled transitions comprising: receiving a first set of data comprising a first pitch value and a first pressure values corresponding to a first location; receiving a second set of data comprising a second pitch value and a second pressure values corresponding to a second location; calculating an output pitch value using the first pitch and first pressure values in the first set of data and the second pitch and second pressure values in the second set of data as input data; and encoding the output pitch value for music synthesis, wherein the output pitch value is different than the first pitch and second pitch values.”
  • Why this patent rocks: This patent appears to relate to pressure-controlled transitions used in the Haken Audio Continuum Fingerboard, an electronic instrument that can be used as MIDI controller or stand-alone synthesiser. Haken Audio writes that “…the Continuum has the ability to evaluate a high-speed stream of performance data, and among other things can effectively encode the complex trajectory of your finger attack. From a psychoacoustic perspective, getting the attack trajectory of your finger accurately scanned, measured and conveyed comprehensively to the sound engine is an essential ingredient for a real-time expressive playing experience.” For more information, see here.
